Smoked Salmon Breakfast Bagels
This breakfast was inspired by Sunday mornings in New York, where bagels with lox and cream cheese are an institution. After moving away, I missed those classic flavors and created this version to enjoy at home. The combination of chewy bagels, creamy cheese, and smoky salmon never fails to impress, whether served as a casual family breakfast or an elegant brunch centerpiece.
Ingredients
- 4 bagels (everything, sesame, or plain)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped, plus more for garnish
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 8 oz smoked salmon, thinly sliced
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 English cucumber, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons capers, drained
- 8 thin slices tomato
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
- Slice bagels in half and toast to desired level of doneness.
- In a small bowl, mix cream cheese with dill, chives, and lemon zest until well combined.
- Spread a generous layer of herb cream cheese on each bagel half.
- Arrange smoked salmon slices over the cream cheese.
- Top with cucumber slices, red onion, tomato, and capers.
- Sprinkle with additional fresh dill and black pepper.
- Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
Recipe Notes
- For an extra-special touch, try making your own herb cream cheese a day ahead to allow flavors to develop.
- Set up a bagel bar for guests to build their own creations with various toppings.
- For a lighter option, use whipped cream cheese or substitute with avocado.
- Try adding thinly sliced radishes or microgreens for additional color and texture.
